Additional Training Material and new Training Section under development

As the Scouts at St Patrick’s (1st Jordanstown) work their way through the various Training Programmes throughout the year

As we make our way through what always turns out to be a fairly comprehensive training programme at St Patrick’s (1st Jordanstown Scouts) we are always trying to find ways that can take this training and “keep it live”. This is so that others can find out more about what we do and also where possible learn a little more about the skills and training that is on offer to all of the Scouts here at St Patricks.

Nowhere is this more pertinent perhaps than in the area of First Aid. Each Scout as they make their way through the Scouting Programme here is invited to take part in basic First Aid Training which will help them twofold. Firstly it will help them fulfill part of the Scouts Motto “to help other people” and secondly it might also help them save a life if they are ever in such a position to call upon this training.

Lastly and let’s not forget that Scouting is also about ongoing training and self measurement, successful completion of such training also qualifies them for the First Aid Badge….and where would scouting be with badge work? :-)

To supplement this training we are going to develop our own internal training section of the Web site and the first stages of this development are the various pages that can be found on the upper right part of this page.

In the meantime let us leave you with video examples of his useful this training can actually be:

Ending the year in style (and not a little mess)

At our last troop night before Christmas and the New Year we all had a great time and ended off the year in style (and not inconsiderable mess) making our own DIY Ice-cream Sundaes.

Tis the Season to be jolly, Merry Christmas one and all!!

Every year Belfast City Center is converted into a Continental Xmas Market and of course we have to visit the market to make sure it keeps up to Standard (and also to buy lot’s of presents for our Leaders ;-) ). Here are some highlights:

Reminder Concerning Museum Visit – 4th November

Quick reminder guys (and gals). This Friday (4th November) sees a great visit for the entire troop down to the War Museum in Belfast. We are all meeting at the Church Car Park for 6.30 pm PROMPT plus……all those going please wear smart gear i.e black trousers and shoes as well as usual essential Scout Shirt and Scarf

Cheers

Additional Features and Training Section

As we compile our Section within this site for Training Purposes (a work in process – Ed) check in here every now and then for a growing selection of Training Videos sourced and chosen by the Troops various Leaders.

If you have anything in mind or indeed spot on your travels on the Internet anything that you think others ought to know about then let us know and we will endeavor to share with the rest of the Troop.

Knowledge is as much about sharing and educating with others as it is just educating ourselves.

Go on, you know you want to?

Images of Summer Camp 2011 Tipperary Wood

I think it goes without saying that this one of the most successful Summer Camps both the Explorers and Scouts have been on for some time and a great big “thanks” must go once again to “Camp Meister Robert” and his team for making it so successful for all of the Scouts and Explorers that made it there.

Here are a few of the images that made it so memorable:

Tipperary Wood Part 2

Yes more images of a great camp – they just keep coming folks :-)

All tied up in Knots

For those who paid attention last week when we were checking the patrol boxes for the forthcoming camp, Roy spent some time at the end discussing and demonstrating some knots / tarps.

He mentioned that there were some cool videos on YouTube that act as a reminder to what he was talking about and they are included below:

Ray Mears / Tarp Hammock Knots

Attention all “Badge Hunters”

This Friday (24th June 2011) sees our annual talk on Fire Safety. This usually a great event if only how to find out how to deal with putting the darn things out when they get out of control at Camp!

Seriously though, this talk could help save a life and if nothing else will leave us all much more aware of howto deal with these situations if and when they arise.

Lastly, for those who pay attention and can answer the correct answers when quizzed later, this talk goes towards the Fire Safety Badge!!!!!

‘Bird’s Eye View’ Bicycle Ride for Bike Week

Hi Gang

Ther enclosed popped into our intray and the leaders thought it was worth a mention to any Scouts or explorers out there who could possibly be interested:

On Sunday 26th June 2011 leaving from Gideon’s Green (Whitehouse Park, Newtownabbey BT37 9SH) at 10.30 am join Sustrans the sustainable transport charity for an easy cycle ride along the Loughshore path and up the Newtownabbey Way. Passing under the amazing Bleach Green Viaducts to Three Mile Water Park. Beyond the park you will get a ‘Bird’s Eye View’ by exploring the riverside larchwood on foot with a local bird expert and then have your picnic in the Park. Return time to Gideon’s Green approximately 12.30/1 o’clock. If you joined Sustrans last year for this ride you will enjoy seeing where the next stage of the path will go, if you haven’t been on the Newtownabbey Way before this is a great opportunity to have a guided tour by Sustrans’ local volunteers and if you want to hear birdsong this is the bike ride for you!

All children must be accompanied by an adult and wear a helmet. Please bring waterproof clothing and a picnic lunch.
